Born and raised Nova Scotian Shirley Symes has been a physician recruiter (and a CASPR member!) since 2008. As Physician Recruitment Consultant for Nova Scotia Health, Shirley is responsible for sourcing and interviewing physician candidates, matching them to NS communities, and assisting with immigration and licensure. Shirley also sits on a provincial Psychiatry Action Group.
Shirley embraces lifelong learning, a favourable outlook in any recruiter. No day is ever the same, and that is what keeps her engaged in the work. She was eligible for retirement in 2019 but has no plans of slowing down.
“Working through immigration policy and licensure with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Nova Scotia was challenging, and something I wish I knew more about when I first started in the field. Another major lesson I have learned along the way is that it takes a community to recruit and retain physicians. I believe most people don’t have a good understanding of the number of people, organizations, steps in processes, and costs related to recruiting and retaining doctors.”
Outside of recruitment, Shirley enjoys standardbred horse racing. She is the proud owner of a two-year-old colt named Fastball Seelster, who she hopes will make it to the races this fall. Before the pandemic, Shirley would attend races in Truro, Prince Edward Island, and the US.
