Located in the Northern part of Alberta; the hamlet of La Crete, is located within Mackenzie County. La Crete is approximately 35 miles (57 km) southeast of High Level and 436 miles (701 km) north of Edmonton. The name “La Crete” means “the ridge” in French, which is how the earliest settlers described the area they settled.

Travel Time:

To Edmonton: 7 hrs

To Calgary: 9.5 hrs

To Grande Prairie: 5.5 hrs

The hamlet of La Crete has rich history dating back to 1918, which has embedded strong cultural ties into the lives of its inhabitants. Named by the Rivard Brothers who were the first settlers of the area, they named the area “La Crete Landing” because it was off the mighty Peace River; a place they called home. “La Crete” which translates as “The Crest”, can also refer to a “Rooster’s comb” and was used to describe the ridge of land where they came ashore about nine kilometers southwest of where the hamlet is today.

Today the population of the Hamlet is close to 4,000. La Crete is connected to high speed internet, cell phone coverage, cable and satellite television, and many other popular amenities.

Despite constant growth, La Crete still holds onto a strong culture and religion. Many residents use a German dialect called “Plautdietsch” or “Low German”. “High German”, which is still spoken in Germany today, is reserved mainly for church services. Most of the community speaks English and conducts business in both languages.

La Crete Recreation (run by John Acreman in correlation with Northern Lights Rec Centre) organizes weekly activities for both youth & adults. There also is La Crete Running Club (5km & 10km programs) for those of you who enjoy jogging or are thinking of giving it a try. There are walking/biking trails to the northeast (parallel to Hwy. 697) and northwest of La Crete (towards Tourangeau “Jake’s” Lake). You will often find families and different groups of people, walking, biking, rollerblading or jogging while enjoying the scenic trails on any given day during the spring, summer and autumn months.

The local AHS Advanced Ambulatory Care Centre provides after-hour service for people with minor illnesses and injuries to be diagnosed and treated. Lab and x-ray services are also available at the centre. All health services are delivered by an exceptional group of dedicated health professionals. These staff members are responsible for delivering medical care, ambulatory care, and long term care.
