Alberta Precision Laboratories (APL) North Sector, in partnership with the Department of Laboratory Medicine & Pathology, University of Alberta, Faculty of Medicine & Dentistry, Edmonton, Alberta is seeking a qualified Fulltime Pediatric Pathologist. The successful applicant may also be considered for an academic appointment with the University of Alberta’s Department of Laboratory Medicine & Pathology.

APL North Sector, with 100+ pathologists, functions as a Center of Excellence, supported by state-of-the-art ancillary testing capabilities (immunohistochemistry, electron microscopy, flow cytometry, cytogenetics, and molecular pathology). The Sector offers a full range of clinical services including two level I trauma centers, solid organ transplantation, high risk obstetrics, Level 1-3 neonatal intensive care, hematology-oncology, and cardiovascular surgery services. Pediatric pathology services are primarily based out of the Stollery Children’s Hospital, housed within the Walter C. Mackenzie Health Sciences Centre, along with the University of Alberta Hospital and Mazankowski Alberta Heart Institute. The Stollery is a full-service pediatric hospital and centre for complex pediatric care and research established in 2001. It is the only specialized healthcare facility for infants, children and youth in central and northern Alberta, serving a geographical area of over 500,000 km, with among the highest inpatient volumes of any children’s hospital in Canada. Over 40 per cent of the children treated at the Stollery are from outside the Edmonton area, including patients coming from northern British Columbia, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, Nunavut, Yukon and Northwest Territories. The Stollery is western Canada’s referral centre for pediatric cardiac surgery and a national leader in organ transplantation.

In addition to comprehensive clinical service exposure, this position will also provide rich academic opportunities through the University of Alberta, which is a Top 4 Canadian university and one of the Top 100 in the world. These opportunities include engagement with the Women and Children’s Health Research Institute (WCHRI), founded in 2006 as a partnership between the University of Alberta and Alberta Health Services, with core funding from the Stollery Children’s Hospital Foundation and the Alberta Women’s Health Foundation. WCHRI is made up of over 400 leading researchers who are passionately committed to women and children’s health and well-being, providing support through research funding and expert research services, as well as investing in the next generation of researchers through graduate and summer studentships, postdoctoral fellowships, research presentations and travel grants

Job Summary & Responsibilities
The successful candidate will provide medical reporting and consultation for Pediatric Pathology cases and work closely with clinicians in pediatrics, oncology, transplantation, neurology, obstetrics, critical care, and surgery. The pediatric pathologist will diagnose diseases that occur during fetal growth, infancy, and child development. The practice requires a strong foundation in general pathology and substantial understanding of normal growth and development, along with extensive knowledge of pediatric medicine. Clinical duties will also include offering medical oversight to technical and regulatory processes and procedures, including quality assurance, and occurrence management. The successful candidate will maintain the highest possible standards of practice.

Qualifications
Minimum qualifications include a MD, with eligibility for licensure in the Province of Alberta with certification in Anatomic Pathology/Clinical Pathology/General Pathology and a Pediatric Pathology fellowship by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada or the American Board of Pathology, or equivalence as recognized by the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Alberta.

A proven track record of collegiality and collaborative practice is required. The ability to multi-task and work in a fast-paced hospital laboratory environment is necessary.

Compensation
Relocation Assistance is provided. Starting remuneration is commensurate with the level of fellowship training and experience, ranging from $364,597.00 to $424,123.00.
