Family Medicine Inpatient Physician – Prince Edward Island Health PEI is seeking Family Medicine Physicians to provide hospital based inpatient care in a collaborative rural setting.

Family Medicine Physicians in the province of Prince Edward Island are providing full-scope family medicine. They work collaboratively with teams of skilled allied health professionals, with the support of a provincial Electronic Medical Record (EMR).

Practice Settings

1. Western Hospital (WH) in Alberton is a rural acute care facility featuring:

  • 23 inpatient beds (23 medical, which includes 2 palliative inpatient rooms) with the ability to flex to 25-27 for short durations
  • A 12‑hour Emergency Department
  • Access to diagnostic imaging, laboratory, ultrasound and electronic health records
  • Referral pathways:
    • CT and Ultrasound: Prince County Hospital
    • MRI: Queen Elizabeth Hospital
    • Trauma and high acuity cases: Queen Elizabeth Hospital

2. Community Hospital O’Leary (CHO) is a rural inpatient care facility in the community of O’Leary featuring:

  • 15 inpatient beds (11 acute care and 4 designated provincial palliative beds).
  • 4 provincially designated palliative care beds, supported by a robust and knowledgeable team at the local and Provincial level.
  • Access to laboratory and X-Ray services.

Work Life Balance

Health PEI is committed to supporting physician wellness and sustainable rural practice. This role offers a predictable alternating week inpatient schedule, allowing for meaningful time away from work to rest, travel, or focus on personal and family priorities.

  • Clearly defined on-service and off-service weeks help support balance and continuity
    Rural practice offers short commute times, strong community connections, and access to nature, recreation, and coastal living
  • 7 days on rotation alternating with 7 days off rotation, rotating between the two community-based facilities of Western Hospital and Community Hospital O’Leary
  • Work hours 8AM – 4PM, with the requirement of overnight call. Physicians on-call will be paid an on-call stipend, eligible for a premium on weekends and holidays as per the Physician Services Agreement.

Work Responsibilities

  • Inpatient rounding on all inpatients at CHO; acute and palliative patient rounding daily, and Alternate Level of Care (ALC) patient rounding weekly or more frequently as required
  • Inpatient rounding on up to 17 inpatients at WH (with a maximum of 15 acute), along with NP collaboration for the care of ALC and transitional care patients; acute and palliative patient rounding daily, and ALC patient rounding weekly or more frequently as required
  • Completion of electronic admission documentation, daily progress notes, CERNER order entry, discharge documentation and appropriate handover documentation / communication
  • Collaborate with team members to ensure high quality, team-based care, including engagement with weekly team discharge rounds
    • available in house or by phone/pager throughout the shift – respond to call/page within 10 minutes of receiving
    • when on call be able to respond in-person within 20 minutes
    • provide handover to incoming on-call hospital physician
  • Participation in overnight call rotation

Certifications and Eligibility Requirements

  • Applicants must be:
    • Eligible for registration with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Prince Edward Island
    • Certified or eligible for certification with the College of Family Physicians of Canada
    • Hold LMCC or MCCQE Part I
    • Have ACLS certification
    • Members of the Canadian Medical Protective Association (CMPA)
    • Eligible for appointment and privileging with Health PEI
    • Preferably have 1–2 years of clinical experience in Canada

Atlantic Registry

Physicians registered in PEI, NB, NS, or NL may qualify for multi‑province licensure through the Atlantic Registry.
