  • Contract-for-Service: Physicians working under a Contract for Service are compensated hourly, as outlined in the Physician Services Agreement. While this model does not include traditional employment benefits (e.g., paid vacation, health and dental, RRSP matching), it does provide access to negotiated benefits such as parental leave. The hourly rate includes an additional amount in lieu of benefits. Compensation: $202 per hour (equivalent to $348,450 annually for a 1.0 FTE) Salary: Physicians employed under the salaried model enter into an employee-employer relationship with Health PEI. This model includes a defined schedule, assigned duties, and a comprehensive suite of employment benefits with an estimated value of $25,000 such as: Health and dental coverage Paid vacation and sick leave Life insurance RRSP matching Compensation: $166.90 per hour (equivalent to $325,455 annually for a 1.0 FTE) Fee-for-Service:  Under this model, physicians are compensated for each service provided in accordance with the Tariff of Fees outlined in the Physician Services Agreement. It offers a high degree of flexibility in scheduling, service volume, and practice style. Physicians are typically responsible for their own overhead costs, which average approximately 25% of total billings. Family Medicine Physicians – Prince Edward Island Health PEI is seeking Family Medicine Physicians to provide full-scope family medicine with the option to provide hospital inpatient coverage within the geographic region.

Family Medicine Physicians in the province of Prince Edward Island are providing full-scope family medicine. They work collaboratively with teams of skilled allied health professionals, with the support of a provincial Electronic Medical Record (EMR). Health PEI is implementing the Patient Medical Home model of care which has been endorsed by the Canadian College of Family Physicians. Family Medicine Physicians have the option to provide hospital inpatient coverage, including but not limited to participating in multidisciplinary rounds, family conferences as needed and discharge planning.

Job Description 
This position is that of a Family Physician, providing general medical primary care to their assigned patient panel. The Family Physician provides services within an interdisciplinary team to provide primary care to patients and their families within a care model which emphasizes health promotion and education.
The Physician fulfilling this position is responsible to provide health care services to all ages with both acute and chronic conditions. The Physician is expected to ensure appropriate, comprehensive treatment is delivered by maintaining complete and accurate medical records, participating in chart reviews, patient counseling, patient teaching, discussion of complex cases, answering patient inquiries, and providing, or directing them to, appropriate treatment. The Physician will collaborate with the team to provide follow-up patient care in a timely manner to the patient.

 

Job Duties 
The Physician will maintain an office-based practice to service the medical needs of their panel.
As for all Physicians, the primary consideration for the Physician shall be the needs, values, and well being of the person receiving care.

The Physician will work collaboratively with other health care workers such as Nurse Practitioners, Nurses, Physiotherapists, Pharmacists, etc. to plan and deliver competent health services.
The Physician will conduct their medical practice in accordance with current standards of medical care and will conform to applicable Health PEI and community and/or hospital policies and procedures. The Physician will adhere to the Physician Services Agreement and comply with the Health PEI Medical Staff Bylaws.

The Physician will adhere to general charting guidelines, in accordance with Canadian Medical Protective Association (CMPA), the Medical Staff Bylaws and the Health PEI Chart Documentation Standard, for the accurate and timely completion of medical records for all patients under their care.
The Physician will be responsible for follow-up patient care and information by reporting all pertinent test results, referrals, consultations, etc. in a timely manner to the patient.
The Physician may be required provide hospital inpatient coverage and may be required to participate equitably in an on-call schedule, based on a full-time equivalent, with individual commitment to be not more frequent than averaging 1 in 3 call schedule (122 days/year). The Physician shall cooperate in the development of an on-call/vacation schedule. (Location dependent – see Practice Settings below)
Physicians contributing equitably to the call schedule may be eligible for a $5,000 or $20,000 rural hospital inpatient incentive, dependent on location.

Certifications and Eligibility Requirements 
Eligible for registration with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Prince Edward Island;
Eligible for certification with the College of Family Physicians of Canada;
Hold MCCQE Part I or Licentiate of Medical Council of Canada (LMCC) equivalent;
Membership with the Canadian Medical Protective Association (CMPA);
Appointment to the Health PEI Medical Staff and appropriate privileging;
Work experience preferable with at least 1- 2 years of clinical experience working in Canada.

Atlantic Registry 
Starting May 1, 2023, physicians whose primary practice is in Atlantic Canada (and hold a general registration in either PEI, New Brunswick, Nova Scotia or Newfoundland and Labrador) may be eligible to obtain registration to practice in all four Atlantic Canadian provinces via the Atlantic Registry.
