The role of the Chief of Psychiatry is an essential medical leadership position that promotes excellence in the quality and safety of patient care within the department.

 

Key Department Initiatives:

·         Advancing substance use and addiction services across the organization.

·         Developing and expanding the dedicated mental health area within the Emergency Department.

·         Improving on-call psychiatry team supports and Emergency Department collaboration to reduce wait times for mental health patients.

 

Main Responsibilities:

·         Report on activities of the department including quality and safety data

·         Oversee departmental appointments by reviewing and making recommendations to the Credentials Committee

·         Oversee the quality of care delivered by members of the department

·         Ensure current best practices and professional standards of clinical care are being met

·         Uphold the values of the department through collaboration, clinical excellence, transparency, accountability, and respect

·         Provide strategic direction on behalf of the department

 

Job Environment:

Hours of Work

·         7.5 hours per week (0.2 FTE)

 

Work Model

·         Flexible work hours, with the exception of some in-person meetings Example: Medical Advisory Committee

 

Term

·         Typically three (3) years (negotiable); 30 days’ termination notice

 

Reporting Structure

·         Reports to the Chief of Staff

 

Supports:

·         In 2025 the Department of Medical & Academic Affairs leadership expanded to include: Chief of Staff, VP of Medical Affairs, Associate VP of Academic Affairs, Director of Chief of Staff s Office, Director of Medical & Academic Affairs, and Manager of Academic Affairs, which has resulted in enhanced support for the Chiefs of Department

 

Growth & Development:

·         Continuing professional development stipend is available up to $5,000 every two (2) years

·         Access to hospital organized leadership development

 

Qualifications:

·         Must be/become an active or associate member of the Department of Psychiatry at TBRHSC

·         Ideal candidates will have administrative and leadership experience, and demonstrate strong interpersonal, change management, organizational, and collaborative decision-making skills

·         Must be a member of the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario (CPSO)

·         Preference given to those who are a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians of Canada (FRCPC), with a minimum of 5 years related experience
