Health PEI is seeking a full-time permanent Obstetrician/Gynecologist to join a growing multi-disciplinary team at Queen Elizabeth Hospital located in Prince Edward Island’s charming capital city, Charlottetown.

Queen Elizabeth Hospital is the provincial referral center for specialized hospital services. The 243-bed facility provides emergency, surgical, inpatient and ambulatory care services.

Come join our welcoming Obstetrics and Gynecology team at Queen Elizabeth Hospital in beautiful Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island. We are a team of eight Obstetrician – Gynecologists looking to recruit a new colleague to help meet the growing needs of our community. Physicians can access operating room time at both QEH and PCH, with a strong focus on minimally invasive gynecologic surgery.

Our department provides comprehensive obstetrical and gynecological care. QEH supports approximately 950 births each year and is home to a Level II NICU caring for infants from 28 weeks’ gestation. Clinical practice includes primary care and consultative obstetrics in a group setting, as well as consultative gynecology and colposcopy services offered within our office space. Our office was built in 2019 and is expanding to accommodate our growing needs. Our practice is EMR based.

Job Duties

• The Physician will provide office-based and hospital-based care, delivering a full scope of Obstetrical and Gynecological services, including inpatient, outpatient, surgical, on-call, and consultative care to residents and visitors of Prince Edward Island.
• The Physician will act as a consultant in Obstetrics and Gynecology to other physicians and primary care providers across Prince Edward Island, working collaboratively with healthcare professionals including Midwives, Nurse Practitioners, Physiotherapists, and Pharmacists to plan and deliver coordinated patient care.
• The Physician will perform non-clinical duties as assigned by the Department Head and Chief Medical Officer, including participation in quality improvement initiatives and committees.
• The Physician will provide inpatient hospital coverage and participate equitably in the on-call schedule, based on a full-time equivalent, with an expected commitment averaging no more frequently than a 1 in 3 call schedule (approximately 122 days per year). The Physician will also collaborate in the development of on-call and vacation schedules.
• The Physician will adhere to established charting and documentation standards, including those set by the Canadian Medical Protective Association (CMPA), Medical Staff Bylaws, and Health PEI Chart Documentation Standards, ensuring accurate and timely completion of patient records.
• The Physician will be responsible for timely follow-up of patient care, including communicating test results, coordinating referrals and consultations, and ensuring continuity of care.

Hours of Work

• Full-time hours for a salaried physician is defined as 37.5 hours per week; 1950 hours per year;
• Full-time contract-for-service hours is based on a maximum of 1,725 hours per year;
• On-call coverage as required, divided equitably within the group based on FTE.

Remuneration

Health PEI offers payment modality options including:

Salary — Physicians employed under the salaried model enter into an employee-employer relationship with Health PEI. This model includes a defined schedule, assigned duties, assigned administrative and nursing support, and a comprehensive suite of employment benefits such as:

–  RRSP matching

Compensation: $193.44 per hour (equivalent to $377,208 annually for a 1.0 FTE)

Contract for Service — Physicians working under a Contract for Service are compensated hourly, as outlined in the Physician Services Agreement. While this model does not include traditional employment benefits (e.g., paid vacation, health and dental, RRSP matching), it does provide access to negotiated benefits such as parental leave. The hourly rate includes an additional amount in lieu of benefits. This model may offer tax advantages for physicians who choose to incorporate.
Compensation: $232 per hour (equivalent to $400,200 annually for a 1.0 FTE)

Fee-for-Service — Under this model, physicians are compensated for each service provided, in accordance with the Tariff of Fees outlined in the Physician Services Agreement. This model offers maximum flexibility in terms of scheduling, service volume, and practice style. Physicians typically operate through a professional corporation, which may offer tax advantages. Most physicians are responsible for overhead costs, which average around 25% of total billings. While this model does not include paid employment benefits, physicians have access to negotiated benefits through the Physician Services Agreement.

Incentives

• Qualified and licensable candidates may be eligible for a return in service grant of up to $100,000 with a 3-year commitment to Health PEI pro-rated to the FTE.
• Eligible moving expense reimbursement of up to $10,000 is available;
• Opportunity to teach Medical Learners and Residents with faculty appointment at affiliated universities;
• Office is EMR based, with the goal of a “one patient, one record” system provincially;
• Access to hospital-based electronic patient record system with lab and x-ray reports from office; and
• Other incentives are as per the Physician Services Agreement.

Certifications and Other Requirements

• FRCPC or eligibility for Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada certification.
• Eligibility for licensure with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Prince Edward Island
• Appointment to the Health PEI Medical Staff and appropriate privileging
• Membership with the Canadian Medical Protective Association (CMPA).
• Work experience preferable with at least 1- 2 years of clinical experience working in Canada. Candidates with a particular interest in urogynecology, or a more dedicated obstetrical practice are encouraged to apply.
